Coal Mining

In line with TH Group's plan to grow its businesses, its has been actively exploring coal mining activities since the beginning of 2006. With soaring crude oil prices, coal, being one alternative source of energy for the generation of electricity power, should be in demand globally. Accordingly, TH Group has identified coal mining activity as one potential area for growth, where the Group plans to leverage on its expertise and track record in timber extraction and infrastructure construction.

During the year 2007, the Coal Mining unit has progressed steadily in its contracting venture in Kalimantan, Indonesia. The effort to establish a stronger position in the business has paid off, with the completion of exploratory drillings and progression towards advanced drillings in various pits. This has paved way for its coal production.

In addition, the unit has moved on to the logistics infrastructure works for coal handling, including hauling roads, jetty and barge loading facilities, to support efficient transportation of coal.

Despite a challenging start, the unit has overcame many obstacles within a short time frame. TH Group will continue to expand its mining contracting unit, as well as to explore growth opportunities, as the outlook for the energy market remains strong.
