Introduction
Healthcare represents the fourth core business of TH Group after plantation, contracting services and IT. The acquisition of the NCI Cancer Hospital (NCICH), formerly known as Nilai Cancer Hospital in Nilai, Seremban, via its holding company Asiaprise Biotech Sdn Bhd at the end of year 2003 marks the Group’s official entry into the sector . An announcement to this effect was first made in July 2003. Subsequently the Securities Commission approved the acquisition in March 2004. The decision to enter this sector was based on several important considerations:
- Natural progression
Prior to the NCICH acquisition, TH Group was already concentrating a large portion of its venture capital investments in biotechnology.
- Sunrise industry
Healthcare is one of the more dynamic industries in Malaysia , boasting an annual growth in excess of six per cent. Currently valued at RM900 million, the figure is expected to reach RM1.2 billion by year 2005.
- Stability
Healthcare is not susceptible to the cyclical nature of many other businesses, and remains reasonably unaffected by the global economic environment.
- Strong Governmental Support
The Malaysian Government has indicated its commitment to promoting the sector by allocating RM5.475 billion to healthcare under the Eighth Malaysia Plan (2001-2005) and is even keen on establishing the country as a centre for healthcare tourism.
